Compuware Releases First Australian Retail Industry Online Transaction Benchmark

~ Average Response Time and Availability Ratings for Ordering a Product Over the Internet in Australia Comparable with Top U.S. Retailers ~

SYDNEY -- December 10, 2010 -- Compuware Corporation (NASDAQ:CPWR), the technology performance company, today released the results of its inaugural Compuware Gomez Retail Product Order Business Process Benchmark for the Australian Retail Industry. This is the first retail benchmark that measures the performance of an online business process.

The Australian Retail Product Order Business Process Benchmark showed that while there were no stand-out performers, top Australian retailers perform comparably with their counterparts in the U.S when it comes to ordering a product over the Internet. The Australian Retail Industry's average Response Time rating of 19.3 seconds in November 2010 was comparable to the U.S. Retail rating of 18.8 seconds.

With a 97.9 percent average Availability Rating for in November, Australian retailers had similar ratings in comparison to U.S. retailers with a 98.3 percent average rating. When it came to the average Consistency Rating, however, Australian retailers at 5.3 seconds offered a more consistent online shopping experience than their counterparts in the U.S at 11.14 seconds.

In November's Response Time ratings, Australiafs top two online performers, Borders (12.5 seconds) and JB Hi-Fi (12.9 seconds), trailed top U.S. performers like Newegg (8.9 seconds) and Office Depot (9.8 seconds). However, the top 10 Australian performers -- Borders, JB Hi-Fi, BIGW, Booktopia, Dymocks, Myer, Woolworths, ABC Shop, DealsDirect and Coles -- all recorded better Response Time ratings in comparison to top retail industry leaders in the U.S.

"Compuware's inaugural Product Order Business Process Benchmark revealed some good news for Australian retailers," said Rafi Katanasho, Solutions Director, Application Performance Management for Compuware. "While their home page performance on average is not as good as their U.S. counterparts, the average processing times for more complex online shopping transactions are very competitive."

Katanasho continued, "Australian retailers have no need to panic when it comes to competing with international brands online. Our benchmark shows that Australian retailers are as good as retailers anywhere at getting the hard things right. That said, there is definitely room for improvement in transaction performance and availability, as well as home page performance."

Gomez Business Process Benchmarks measure typical multi-step processes -- such as purchasing a product -- across major brands in the same industry to provide an unbiased view of the state of the Web or mobile site.

For the Australian Retail Product Order Business Process Benchmark, the steps are:

  • Home Page. Navigate to the home page of the retailer. If the institution does not have a home page search form for a product, then the appropriate button or link is selected to navigate to a sub-category page. The search term varies depending on the type of retailer.
  • Search Results Page. The web site will display a list of available products within the search criteria. The first product result provided by the search results is automatically selected. If the retailer provides inventory availability data, the test will navigate through to the first product available online.
  • Product Description Page. This page will contain a description and price of the product. Any attributes such as colour or size are automatically selected and the product is added to the shopping cart.
  • Shopping Cart Page. After displaying the shopping cart, the test will navigate to it by initiating the Checkout process.
  • Login Page. The test navigates to enter a previously created account profile. The profile is pre-configured for all default credit card and address information. If the retailer does not leverage the profile information, the test will navigate through any shipping or payment verification pages.
  • Order Review Page. The test will navigate to the order review page, containing product price and shipping information. If a retailer does not flush the cart contents, a separate Gomez test is used to clear the cart for the next test.

Availability, Response Time and Consistency metrics for these Business Process Benchmarks relate to the end-to-end performance of the multi-step process. The Response Time rating measures the time elapsed to complete the multi-step process and is calculated as the average access time for the process measured from the backbone of the Gomez Global Performance Network in Australia, based on 72 access attempts per day over a one month period. The Availability rating is the percentage of attempts that were successful, and the Consistency rating is the standard deviation of the Response Times.
